Want To Stop SOPA, PIPA, And Whatever Else?

The only way we (as a society) could ever come close to stopping the continual barrage of media corporations throwing money at politicians to create laws for them will never happen. Even if this particular round of laws aimed at protecting the copyright cartels doesn’t pass, it won’t dissuade them. They’ve got the money and resources to keep trying to buy whatever laws they want and eventually they will get it.

Blacking out websites, petitions, barrages of mail, tweets, etc to politicians, and all of that as a form of protest is great. But ultimately, money talks and all of that is really ineffective.

It would take an effort by everybody together to scare the living crap out of these companies. And the only real way to do that is for EVERYONE to show the corporations that we don’t need them and their products. Just a few days or even a week where nobody watches their shows on TV. Nobody buys a single movie ticket, DVD, Blu-ray, CD, or song. But also, nobody downloads any of this stuff legally or “illegally” or streams it. Nobody.

Can you imagine the panic this sort of public backlash would cause these huge corporations? It’s their absolute worst nightmare. A weekend where their movies open to empty theaters? “What’s number one at the box office this weekend? Nothing!”

Of course this will never happen. We’d never get everybody to agree. There are people too dumb or even addicted to their products to give it up, even for a few days. If giving up some more of their personal freedoms means they get to watch the latest episode of The Real Housewives Of Bismark North Dakota or see whatever horrible remake of an old movie Hollywood has vomited up, then they don’t mind.
